One thing I did recently was host an informational session about foster care. And by “hosted” I mean hosted. I just organized the event and attended. I was there to glean knowledge as much as everyone else was. My husband and I plan to become certified foster parents before the summer months. We talked years ago about becoming foster parents, but the Lord opened up the door for us to adopt our son and the idea sat on the back-burner for a while. But we revisited it this summer and decided it was definitely something we wanted to do as a family.
My sister is a licensed social worker and counsels a lot of foster/adopted kids. She has talked to me so much about the need for good foster homes and the needs of the children involved. She has been encouraging me to foster for a few years now. I think at first I felt like maybe I wasn’t equipped to handle it, but I think that less and less. I think ultimately, kids have the same human needs... but, because of life circumstances, most outside of their own control, kids are all on different parts of the needs-spectrum. The Lord will equip and prepare us for the children he places in our care, whether those placements are temporary or permanent. But at the end of the day, we strongly believe that it is the church’s responsibility to care for these children, and we want to do our part.
